Kodaicanal

so the week prior to Good friday we got bonus chuttis.. we had an off on wednesday (tamil new year) and thursday (elections) and yet we didnt plan a trip blame it on laziness or lethargy. not sure...the holidays were sudden and we didnt plan anything... spent time on the beach and thats about it!!

And then came the Godd friday weekend which we didnt want to waste.. So we packed our bags and boarded the bus to madurai.. the bus started from koyembedu and we waited for a long long time when someone called and said we were waiting at the wrong place..then we figured out where we had to go and boarded the bus which played three tamoil movies all night... We reached madurai early morning and boarded a local bus for kodaicanal which was so damn slow..we thought we would never reach but we did.. and we went to our lodge which was a quaint little place but baap re there was so much climbing to do.. our room was part of a family room... we took a bath and then walked upto the lake.. we then ate a wonderful indian lunch and took a round of the lake gorging on gudiya ka baal, chai, home made chocolate nad bhutta..
We were carrying umbrellas because it had been raining.. suddenly i saw a man brush his hand in an attempt to touch neha.. both of us beat him up with an umbrella. Neha even used the F word.. I am sure that man will never touch a woman again..
We then laughed about it.. thank god, we vented it out elser we would have felt very bad. Taking a round around the lake in tha rain was nice.. we ate plums and suddenly there would be mist like raaz and then rain... We even saw kodai international school and sat near its football ground..We went for the famous coakers walk but it became misty so we headed backlater, we went for dinner at the tibetan place and found a bakery of our choice.

Next day, it was a sunny morning we vacated our room, kept our luggage at the bakery and went towards bear shola falls ..it was a promising walk..however, the falls were non existent.. Then we headed to the town and went to a famous bakery where we had some wonderful bread and pastry.. We then decided to walk to pillar rocks which were 6.5 kms away.. We walked in the rain and we walked but i think we had just walked 2.5 kms and then headed back.. it was raining too much.. we had lunch at the pot luck cafe and then went to buy bus tickets after collecting our luggage...
We headed back to madurai, reached at about 8 and then went to CCD to use the washroom and wash our feet.. later we took a round of the meenakshi temple and went to the bus stop.. our bus came at 11.15.. it was the most comfortable bus ride.. we slept till we reached chennai :)

Andaman's

Offsite to Andaman's
Day 1
So, we went to Andaman's for our annual plan meet. Morning about 4, Kunal picked me up from my home and we reached the airport where almost the whole team was waiting..Why? because evelyn wanted everyone to travel together..
So, then we boarded the flight, i had the window seat...tried sleeping but failed..spent time looking outside the window.. We reached Port blair soon..
We had to wait for the bus wwhich would take us to the ferry. The place had a very goa feel to it.. but i hadn't seen anything till now.. soon we reached the port, bought tickets and entered the ferry which was air conditioned.. It was a nice ride.. the water was amazingly clean and we reached Havelock island very soon :)
There, i looked at the water..clear, transparent you could see fishes inside.. It was bliss... then we hired 2 cars and reached our resort called Symphony palm resort.. the forest on one side and sea on the other (agar tsunami aati, toh mar jate)
We dumped our luggage and went to the beach... then we enjoyed the clear water which was very very salty.. there were too many rocks i felt..they kept hurting my feet..
soon we went for lunch and then again on a walk..
It rained and we watched the india-Pak world cup match.. We won :)
Then we went for the team dinner

Day 2
The next day we got up early, went to the beach but water had receded..now i saw what had hurt me the previous day.. there were so many corals, its not funny.. We then had our teeam meeting and then a break for lunch. we hired scooters.. i sat behind rupalee and we went to radhanagar beach.. the water was clear...i was neck deep inside water and by now i thought i had learnt a bit of floating.. and so many times waves would come and i would be inside water.. big waves..bliss..i have started loving water :) so many times i would be under it and then resurface.. the waves were loving.. then completely wet, we clicked very many photos and went back to the resort.. then we went for another team dinner, post which the annual plan meet

Day 3
Morning we had the team meet, where there were some arguments.. I hired a cycle and went to the coral beach after having a banana pie :) my boss came behind me.. we had chai and then i asked him to carry on on his bike while i cycled back.. a dog followed me and stayed with me.. when it came running behind me, i thought "aaj kutta khayega" bit it was loving.. it was bliss cycling on the road with the sea on one side, the forest on another and raindrops on my head.. i found some beautiful corals and trees and then thought it would be wise to head back.. then i slept a bit when everyone returned.. after that we just had dinner and anotheer annual meet.. again there was a fight but it got resolved

Day 4
The last day, we went to elephant bay: pretty as can be... it was the first time i went snorkelling in water and floated and wore life jackets to reach the bay.. the whole experience was awesome :)
we also went on a glass boat.. to observe underwater life is an experience...
i floated and floated and then we had to leave.. we returned to the resort, packed and left for port blair. In the night, we did some shopping and slept because we had an early morning flight. We then left for Chennai in the morning saying goodbye to the beautiful andaman's. i hope i can visit again :)

Amdavad

So once again, the researcher got ready..this time for a survey on livestock insurance. (rem the van gouh problem, where people cut ears of cows as proof that they were dead. So loads of animals with one ear were found..just like his painting where he has cut his own ear...baap re)
anyway, so we went to cattle owners in a district in called mehsana very close to amdavad..
each visit to a village is special..
I sat and discussed similar triangles with a kid who was studying.
I was gifted lemons in one village..
Most households mei i was served tea.. In Gujarat, you have chai in the plate
In one village, they said somethin in gujarati which i didnt understand and i was dismissed as deaf..
so many incidents, so many memories.. each field visit enriches you..makes you realise how small you are coz you are urban. how many times have you shunned a salesman from your house without offering them water?
Atithi devo bhav is best followed in villages..

Post thesis and best friend's wedding :)

So after the whole tamasha that i made about my thesis...i finished it..i reached bombay on 6th night, finished most of the work in 3 days and then had to run behind my guides for their precious signatures and my M Phil was complete on Valentine's day.In all this time i went to my favourite hangouts..sun, moon and potatoes, classic veg, gokuldham temple, oberoi mall, luckys :) we even went to town one day but trust us to hire a cab back (upasak, shaz, shobu n i) and head back to watch a movie at oberoi..upasak said to the cab wala :"bhaiya, apna excitement aur mera fear kam kariye" coz he was driving too fast and then "mummy papa ko yaad karr leta hun" but we reached and watched yeh saali zindagi
Post the struggle with my thesis, I went on Kush's wedding..it was so much fun.. we stayed ta the venue of the wedding..the guys smuggling in booze..and the train journey jahan pe puri aallooo khaya, kya kya nahi khaya..pahunche hum and i wore a saree..got many many pics clicked :)and i met four out of fivee of the DIpsiite gang

After the shaadi, where both kush and gayatri were wearing mukut, we went to our room but kush came and didnt let anyone sleep.

Next day we left for delhi. the reception too was very cool :)

confusion

I am having a couple of hard days. it always happens when there is too much happening in my life, in my surroundings affecting me indirectly ..but when so much happens i suddenly realise that i do not possess it in me..to go on..
so, there is my thesis which is an unfinished story dragging on since 2007..then my leave status which is in negative, my CV which just isn't getting updated, the job search which hasn't started for me yet, the competitive exams which i never seem to clear (call it the NET) well, as of today there is no clarity or stability in life. i have gone on living not knowing what i want...it worked till today but it is getting tougher by the day. i dont think i can go on living this way. i did like my job earlier but i no longer do and i dont want to compromise because of the money it gives me. if i aint happy, i should move on. but moving on requires a courage which i lack. the fear of rejection or the ridicule i will face. i think i am a person with too many insecurities. i always was maybe...
forget that at almost 27, i do not know what i want. the age limit for most of the competitive exams is 30. but suppose i decide i want to become a doctor at 30, just because i am old, i cant get admission in a college? why do we have these age limits? if i haven't figured it out till 30?
i think the problem is in being me. i am too laidback to deal with all the competition around me or i aint hard working enough. emotions do not drive this world and the faster i understand, the better it is for me.

A smile is that curve which sets everything straight. Smile, it costs nothing. Smile and the world smiles back.. but it is sort of true. I have these smiles reserved for some people in life. Bangalore- Hampi-Mysore

Day 0
There is a background to how this trip started. So we had a 3 day pongal weekend.. 15-16-17 january. deepti however booked tickets thinking we had an off on friday, 14th...thus i had to take an off on friday while i am exteremly short on holiday....what with having to complete my thesis and attend a friend's wedding in rourkela (abbe yaar, rourkela mei shaadi kaun karta hai)
khair, so we left chennai on thursday night and went to bangalore. it was a sleeper bus and we slept well, not so soundly but reached bangalore early morning.

Day 1
We called Ajay and asked him for directions to his house and slept 3 hours straight at his house. Later, his mother made some yummy food and we ate and we ate. Then we left to go to Forum mall to meet Altaf!
It my friends is a paap to travel in bangalore. I swear, it took us 2 hours to reach the mall and there we met Altaf for an hour. Poor fellow, he came with us in one auto to Ajay's home where we ate some more, did loads of ajay bitching (i think that is my favorite past time).
Then Ajay dropped us to the station and we boarded the train to Hospet.
there was one beautiful punjabi aunty but she was so bossy..constant bak bak in the train. fir hum so gaye..

Day 2
We reached hospet in the morning, found an auto which would take us around hampi for the whole day sightseeing. We first went and freshened up in a lodge and had tea and idli. Now started the Hampi tour.
We went to the main temple and then went for a walk behind the temple where there was a ganesh temple and other structures. The view was magnificent, mesmerising. You know the feeling of being small/inconsequential that i feel when i am close to the ocean, i felt similarly in the ruins.
from the hill, you see all the stones, stone houses, broken stones, everything, making you feel how vast and powerful the empire was once upon a time, how you leave everything behind when you leave this world..how things which were super powerful once upon a time are just ruins now. Mitti se aakar mitti mei mil jana hai!!
Next, we looked at the krishna temple, hampi bazaar, krishna bazaar, its awesome!! totally awesome..We kept meeting a family at all these places who took some great pictures of deepti and me.
Now we went to the Shiv temple after this our auto did not start..we had nariyal pani till the auto walas together resolved the problem...
We then went to the watch tower, elephant stables and museum..
We looked at the queen's bath from outside and then went to the area where the dance performances were held. mountains on one side, trees on the other, stones on the third..by now we were very hungry.. the auto wala took us to a buffet place where we ate to our fill...
after this we went to the temple where the rath is.. behind this temple, the river flows and hanuman temple can be seen.. we also saw the round boats that are a must sight at hampi..
we reached the station by 8 and boarded the train to bangalore..we dozed off soon..

Day 3
We took the train to mysore in the morning..for some reason i checked the tickets and they were for 16th feb..shit. i told deepti and she called vinod who booked us new correct tickets. thank god. we went to a lodge, took a bath and then an autowala took us to chamundi hill where we had no intention of going. the view from the hill was pretty awesome..we could see the church, the museum, the lake..we also paid a visit to nandi..
we had mysore masala dosa, took a print out of the fresh tickets and decided to go the museum...
we met a ghodagadi..it was a sweet driver who dropped us to the museum..we went inside and took photos everywhere in every pose possible. we didnt go inside.. at 5, we went to the station and boarded our train to bangalore..
finally we boarded our bus to chennai and reached home..

uncertainty

So today was my mid year evaluation.

currently there are a million things bothering my head...a hampi trip which i wanted to cancel since the very beginning..my thesis whose final comments have arrived and the deadline is in wait for it a month!! kaise hoga yaar.....the PWDS quant survey that needs to be planned and is delayed since ever...the WRMS data that needs to be analysed...the ITGI cost benefit analysis that needs to be done. alright, i know i need a life but there is just too much in my head apart from the emotional turmoil of shaadi.com, an ex who i still keep calling for emotional support, couple of friends in bombay who i miss a lot..some of them are getting married..and i am losing a home in bombay..my delhi friends...abbe yaar...dilli ki sardi..ghar yaar.. i mean there is just too much :( just too much...i need dumbledore's pensive...my toh face becomes so hot with tension yaar..kuch nahi pata mujhse...what the future holds in store..i am just so so so unsure/uncertain of the future..

to top it all , today is Lohri and i am missing home badly...the bonfire, the popcorn, moongfali, rewri, gajjak, dhol, gaana bajana, pooja, dance :( :(

on the brighter side, i heard loads of good stuff about myself in the evaluation!! loads n loads and i made some committments to keep..writing two papers..big deal hai yaar...kaise hoga i dont know

but most of all mera thesis...it took me 3 whole days to figure out what the examiner meant..and i am still not too optimistic :(

Kerala :)

day 0
we started on a monday night! why monday? because we were writing the wretched NET exam on the sunday prior to this.
we should have bunked NET. we would have gained 3 days more straight!!

anyway, so my 3 ladies flew in from delhi on monday afternoon and kept sending messages to me because while i was in office on the 27th, they were making and eating Maggi at home. and, can you beat it? they even went to murugan idli shop (MIS) without me!! (with or without you)
i should have taken an off.
so after i returned from office at 6, i started packing. stuffed everything in my office laptop bag quickly and once these guys came back from MIS, we left for the local station. four of us in one auto when some people commented on the stuff they had left at home but we were in no mood to go back.
Well, i had too many bags though, the laptop bag with my clothes, one jhola with some other clothes and another one full of goodies :)
Neha bought the tickets and we rushed up the never ending steps because we could hear the local reaching the station. we caught it bags n all..
neha and krutika had boarded the first class and manika and i in the second class..khair, the next station manika and i deboarded our coach and joined the other two, breaking the law together. soon, we reached the central station. our train was on the track already but no electricity inside..we located our coach and waited on a bench outside..manika and i went to buy some vadas and we then went to our coach and settled down. then we had a biryani, vadas and slept soundly till the morning when we reached alpuzha aka alleppey :)

day 1
so we reached alleppey and took a pre paid auto from the station for st george's lodging and we reachedd. it was a comfortable place except the washroom. that was weird. the ca-mode was located in a gully inside the washroom. plain different.. quickly, we took a shower and left the place to go for lunch. Lunch was a good meal. we didnt find appam but we found veg curry for ourselves while the other 2 ladies had prawns! after this we headed to the backwaters where we went on a 2 hour cruise :) it was beautiful. the sun's reflection on the water, houseboats all along the way. we admired nature's beauty, the sun's magnificence, the coconut trees amidst the water backdrop, the children playing in the backwaters, the greens on the water..it all got together to present to my eyes a scene outside the world..
it was amazing..manika and krutika took turns steering the ferry while i just enjoyed feeling the breeze against my face :) neha took some amazing pictures of the sun and the water. whil returning, we stopped at a nariyal pani shop where there were domesticated eagles..we had nariyal pani and malai and then returned to our room.
In the evening, we went to the beach and dipped our feet in the cool water. We then headed to eat. However, we were ravenous and there was a long waiting time, hence we went to eat at coffee house. that day, i had the most amazing scrambled egg of my life :) we returned in a big auto to our lodge.. there was loads of laughter with manika pronouncing solar as solaar and then we remembered neha had read popy umbrellas as oppy umbralla in the morning..we soundly slept after that..only the mattress was shifting a bit but we adjusted and slept on till 7 in the morning!

Day 2
Who takes a bath at 7 am? none of us. we quickly did the necessary things and left for the station. our train to ernakulam came at 8.30. we got kela chips and toffees to keep us happy all the way:) thankfully, we got a khali sleeper coach where we sat luxuriously:) we reached ernakulam and realised there was an auto strike. so a reporter approached us outside the station
Reporter: Do you know there is an auto strike? Where do you have to go?
Neha: ya, we know. We have to go to fort cochin.
Reporter: How will you go?
Neha: bus
Reporter: if there was not a strike, how would have you gone?
Neha: bus

There, the poor reporter didnt get any story out of us. but, this bus was crowded and it was a long wait at the bus stop. we had even boarded a wrong bus but we reached in about an hour and a half. Sonnetta residency people. If you go to Fort cochin, please stay at Sonnetta residency :) the uncle at residency was so cute and concerned. he was also funny. we could not wear chappals there. and he actually touched the floor to show us that it was so clean. "don't you see?"
i loved our room. we forgot to take its picture though. we took a shower and went for lunch. we got ripped off at a roadside dhaba... the food was not great and the bill was too great. no value for money!
anyway, we went for a walk, looked at chinese nets and then headed to Jew town.
there are shops on both sides with shopkeepers saying "my friend, you cant go without visiting my shop" fake accents everywhere. the only pepper exchange in the world we saw from the outside. the first time i visited a synagogue. apparently, only 17 jewish families stay in and around the area. we also went to see the cemetery which i kept pronouncing as symmetry and of course was the butt of loads of jokes!!
in the evening, we went to watch a kathakali performance.. the make up itself takes 2 hours. each colour represents somethin..green: for a good character, red: for a bad character, yellow for a woman and so on..
so it was this performance where arjun and lord shiva (disguised as a hunter) fight over who killed a wild boar. parvati played a major role and kept beating lord shiva..it was funny and good :)
after that, we went to a shop called tea pot where all of had our cuppa.
Dinner was at oye's where i ordered dal makhani for some reason but got dal tadka. sigh.
we went back to our room and were attacked by 3 baby chipkalis. sahay is the only brave one!
anyhow, we slept because next day we planned to start early!

Day 3
in the morning, we got up at 6 and left for vypeen islands. first we had to take the ferry till the island and then the bus till the beach. the bus ride took almost an hour and a half and it dropped us about 3 kms away from the beach. we walked all the way. it was a beautiful walk. and the beach was so amazing and loving. i thought i am scared of water. i just wonder why with these ladies, i go deep inside it! be it goa or kerala. i had an amazing time. soon, it was time to leave because we had to check out at sonnetta by 11.
it was just our luck, that buses at vypeen were on a strike. hence, we waited at the bus stop for about half an hr when a van on which it was written 'miracle' arrived. it took us till the ferry for 15 bucks each. thank god. we reached sonnetta at 10.30, checked out and went for breakfast or brunch rather. we then left for ernakulam so that we could catch the bus to varkala.
by 2, we were sitting in the bus till kollam. we were supposed to get off at kallambakkam and change buses since varkala is not on the main road. neha made a call to new heaven where we had our reservation. they offered to pick us up from kallamballam.
so our bus reached at 7 to kallamballam where we boarded another bus to varkala. on the way, there was a yellow procession of some devotees. it was never ending. we reached varkala. for new heaven we had to take an auto.. so we did...and when we reached there, we were told there was no booking in our name.. the man kept smiling..he took us to another hotel and showed us a hotel demanding a much higher price than what we had agreed upon..and neha lost her cool.. all of us did..but she walked off thinking that she wasn't of any help and krutika said " we have to stick by her" haha..manika and i followed suit not knowing what to do..outside we looked for alternative accommodation..we found a place where toufiq (the owner) told us we would get a good room the next day and had to adjust in a yoga house which belonged to a german next door. the german was called hari..i guess harry became hari..hence we went to the yogaroom..there was just a big bed there..and hari said he charged 1300 per person but he would give us the room for 1300..since the beginning, he implied he was doing us a favour. maybe he was ..it was 8 in the night..sigh..so he asked us if we needed an extra mattress and the great me said we'll just use the yoga mat...i wish i knew better..
he got 2 plates of food for the 4 of us and some bread and jam..the food was insufficient..hence i had a weird mix of bread, jam, bhujia and pyaaz surprising all my friends. neha said i was possessed!!

Day 4
anyway, the next morning when we were leaving hari demanded 1500 bucks ..200 for the crappy food..i didnt know what to say... we had slept uncomfortably on a stupid bed..no tv..no ac..just yoga mats and now this..all the while pretending he was doing us a favour...saala hari...this was not the end...
we went to toufiq's hotel and he said people who were supposed to check out had not..not again! we had to look for a room now..i was in a horrible mood because of hari and then...

we found a wonderful room at bamboo village. there were cottages n we got one :) hammocks n sea side view from the cliff...the best place you could be on new year's eve. :)
and then we went to the beach where krutika taught manika how to float...bahut mazzaa aaya..:) we built up a huge appetite and went to eat at a nice treehouse place..after having finished, i decided i would go for a massage...full on pampering day..in the evening we went to a place called Tibetan restaurant..grabbed the best table with the sea view..but there was no breeze..i should warn you if in kerala you order something expect it in an hour..so we ate and we ate..peta bread, spring roll, LIT, SOTB, fish n chips, Mojito, pizza..only the dessert was crushed biscuit, banana n ice cream mixed together..haha..we then went on a walk at about 11.30pm..we first went to our room..
here is an incident: the people who were staying in the cottage next to ours were 4 men..and one of them knocked our door saying somethin like " we are also 4 single men" " what are your plans" etc etc..manika aunty nicely sent them away..

so we went on our walk..looked at the fireworks and then came back and slept..

Day 5
The next day, we woke up early went for a walk to the beach and then krutika treated us at breakfast.. we then left varkala for trivandrum.. we reached tvm around afternoon and just lazed about on the bed..at 5, krutika told us that we should get out..so we went to the market and shopped for kela chips, handicrafts, coconut soap (we must have walked 3 kms for this!!!)
after we finished, subin came to see us... for the first time in the 5 days , we ate appams :)
post dinner, we crashed for the day...

Day 6
The train was at 5.30 and we left at some odd hour looking for autos..we just slept in the train..and then had all sorts of things..biryani, samosa achar, chips, frooti, ice cream..it was good fun..we reached chennai at about 11..took an auto and reached home.

it was a good trip. kerala is beautiful, picturesque beautiful. i need to go again for munnar, periyar, kovalam and lots else ...

me the south indian!!!

something has changed in the way i talk. i have been told by most of my friends that i have a south indian twang in my accent. so i speak the word project with pro being excessively long. forget that, the classic was when today in office i told a collegue: "yaar neend aa raha hai!" pat came his reply, "neend aata nahi hai" the surprise is that this dude is south indian! haha
anyway, there is a lot more that keeps happening..increasingly i realsie i speak wrong hindi and sometimes thanks to my bihari flatmate, i talk like the humko people. fundamental problem is that i change the way i talk...hum hum hum!!

i think it is time i accept that my hindi has gone for a toss..the genders are never right..the I is never used! and well, i am a person who can speak just 2 languages and i used to think my hindi was very good. false beliefs!sigh.

friends, you have lost me as being north indian. at best, i am a polluted north indian after having lived in mumbai and chennai where everyone speaks wrong hindi. mai roun ya hasun..karun mai kya karun..
